📰 Top Story: Justice Served
Thanks to the tireless efforts of our local law enforcement and the Gwinnett County District Attorney's office, justice has been served for recent violent crimes.

Snellville Man Sentenced to 30 Years for Targeting Former Classmates: A Snellville man, Jet Horne, 20, was recently convicted and sentenced to 30 years in prison (with 25 to serve) for a series of shooting attacks that targeted his former high school classmates between December 2024 and May 2025. He was found guilty of multiple felony charges, including aggravated assault and hijacking a motor vehicle.

Arrest in Shooting Death of Oscar Cruz, Body Dumped Outside Church: The Gwinnett County Police Department recently made a second arrest in the murder of Oscar Cruz, a father who was found shot to death with his hands duct-taped in a church parking lot in Snellville. The investigation revealed that Cruz was kidnapped at gunpoint from his home in July, before being driven to the church parking lot where he was killed.

Gwinnett County Announces SPLOST Road Safety Improvements Near Snellville                                                   In nearby Gwinnett County news, which directly impacts Snellville-area commuters, the county announced that construction is currently underway on significant road improvements funded by the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). A key project involves building a new roundabout at the intersection of North Bogan Road and Thompson Mill Road.

This initiative is aimed squarely at improving traffic flow and enhancing safety for drivers in the increasingly busy area. Additionally, the Gwinnett County Opioid and Abatement Advisory Committee is hosting a series of community town halls this week and next, providing residents in the Snellville area with resources and information to address the ongoing opioid addiction crisis impacting the county.

Alcohol Sales Zone Unveiled as 'The Grove' Downtown Transformation Progresses

Fun Facts: How Snellville Was Born"
Snellville was founded by two 17-year-old friends from London,
Thomas Snell and James Sawyer, who secretly planned a voyage to the United States in 1874.

They eventually reunited in Gwinnett County and opened Snell and Sawyer's Store, which was so successful that customers traveled from as far away as Athens to shop there, leading the area to be named Snellville after Thomas Snell!  For a period, they even printed their own store money with Thomas's picture on it for regular customers.

The town was a declining logging community until a few local businessmen, seeking a way to boost tourism, approached artist John Kollock. Inspired by his time stationed in Bavaria, Kollock sketched an Alpine design for the buildings, and the community adopted this new Bavarian style in 1969 to successfully transform itself into a major tourist destination.
