Former Democrat nominee for District Attorney arrested by police and FBI for trying to poison husband with Fentanyl, charged with attempted murder Former Democrat nominee for District Attorney arrested by police and FBI for trying to poison husband with Fentanyl, charged with attempted murder Cullman attorney Sara Baker allegedly tried to kill her husband with fentanyl. CULLMAN, Ala. – Court records released on Wednesday, Nov. 26, allege that local attorney Sara Baker, 74, of Vinemont, attempted to kill her husband, James Doyle Baker, by adding fentanyl to his food and drinks. The criminal complaint alleges she: “Did, on or about September 1, 2025, through November 25, 2025, intentionally agree with one or more other persons to engage in conduct constituting the crime of murder (13A-6-2, Code of Alabama), and one or more of the conspirators committed an overt act in furtherance of the conspiracy, to-wit: ENGAGED ANOTHER PERSON TO PROVIDE FENTANYL TO CAUSE THE DEATH OF JAMES DOYLE BAKER.” It also alleges that, on three separate occasions (Sept. 4, Sept. 12 and Sept. 20), Baker “…with the intent to commit the crime of murder (13A-6-2, Code of Alabama), attempt to intentionally cause the death of another person, to-wit: JAMES DOYLE BAKER, BY PUTTING A SUBSTANCE SHE BELIEVED TO BE FENTANYL IN HIS FOOD AND/OR DRINK, in violation of 13A-4-2, Code of Alabama.” Cullman attorney Sara Baker was detained on Tuesday, Nov. 25, after a raid on her home. She faces charges of attempting to poison her husband, Mr. Doyal Baker. She also faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder, three counts of attempted murder, unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, second-degree elder abuse, four counts of solicitation related to controlled substances, and second-degree domestic violence. The names of the remaining victims have not yet been released. The Cullman Police Department said Baker was taken to the Cullman County Detention Center. She reportedly bonded out on a $400,000 bond on Wednesday afternoon represented by Berry, Berry, Little, and Chaney. In a media release, the department stated, “The Cullman Police Department would like to extend its appreciation to District Attorney Champ Crocker, the Cullman County District Attorney’s Office, the FBI North Alabama Violent Crimes Task Force, and the FBI Safe Streets Task Force for their assistance in this case.” Baker previously served as an assistant district attorney and ran for district attorney as a Democrat in 2004. Baker is considered innocent until proven guilty. Another Falls Victim to Drivers in CullmanFatal Vehicle-Versus-Pedestrian Accident in Cullman, Alabama Incident Claims the Life of Crystal Lynn Brooks Overview On Saturday, November 22, 2025, a tragic accident happened in Cullman County, resulting in the death of 48-year-old Crystal Lynn Brooks, a local resident. The crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian occurred while Lynn was walking on Lessman Street SW near Veigl Avenue, when she was hit by a vehicle. This event has saddened the community and highlighted the need for improved pedestrian safety in the neighborhood. Details of the Incident According to the Cullman Police Department, Crystal Lynn Brooks was struck while crossing Lessman Street SW near Veigl Avenue. Emergency responders took her to a local hospital, but she tragically died from her injuries. Currently, authorities have not released further details about the driver or the circumstances of the crash. Investigation and Response The Cullman Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit is currently investigating the crash. Their investigation will aim to identify the cause, including potential factors such as distracted driving, speeding, negligence, or failure to yield to pedestrians. No additional details about the driver or any charges have been released at this time. Pedestrian Safety Concerns Pedestrians remain some of the most vulnerable road users. Sadly, Crystal Lynn Brooks's death underscores an alarming trend of fatal pedestrian accidents in Cullman. Data shows that a pedestrian is killed every two hours and injured every eight minutes on U.S. roads. These statistics emphasize the crucial need for increased vigilance and better safety measures for pedestrians. Legal Perspective Candice Bond, a seasoned pedestrian accident attorney and Managing Partner at Bond Legal, emphasized in The Legal Advocate the importance of an independent investigation led by an experienced lawyer in cases like this. "Having the right resources is crucial to properly investigate a pedestrian accident and prove negligence," Bond explained. She noted that a thorough review must consider all elements, including road conditions, visibility of signs, and lighting. This process is essential to help families who have lost loved ones secure the justice they deserve. Bond added, "It is almost always a driver's duty to yield to any pedestrian." Wrongful Death Claims As the investigation is ongoing, Crystal Lynn Bond’s family might have the option to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families in such cases can seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain, suffering, and emotional distress caused by these tragic events. Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, emphasized that drivers must yield to pedestrians at both marked and unmarked crosswalks at intersections. He noted that headlight use—where allowed—can help drivers see pedestrians better near the road. Formica also recognized the deep grief families face after losing loved ones and highlighted the importance of protecting their legal rights. "A wrongful death lawyer will stay updated on the official investigation and work to safeguard families' rights and interests," he stated. Community Impact The loss of Crystal Lynn Brooks has deeply touched the Cullman community. Friends, family, and neighbors have expressed their condolences and continue to support her loved ones during this difficult time. Community leaders are calling for greater awareness and improved safety measures to help prevent similar tragedies in the future. Conclusion The fatal accident that took the life of Crystal Lynn Brooks underscores the dangers pedestrians face each day. As the investigation proceeds, the community awaits more information and hopes for measures that will enhance safety on Cullman County’s roads.
