Author- Nadine Nader

Picture
Nadine Nader, a retired professor with a passion for history and storytelling, has embarked on a new career as a historical novelist, with her latest work, Tears in the Danube, shedding light on a little-told part of Holocaust history. In a recent interview, Nader discussed her extensive background and the personal inspiration behind her work.

Nader’s path to authorship was a lifelong journey fueled by her love of reading, which began in childhood. She parlayed this passion into a long and distinguished career in education, teaching English, government, and U.S. history at the high school level before spending four decades as a professor at Delta College. It was her retirement, however, that allowed her to dedicate herself fully to writing.

Tears in the Danube is a historical novel based on the true story of a Jewish man named Willie, a character inspired by a man named Wilhelm Jiren, who was forced to flee Vienna, Austria, during the Nazi invasion. Nader, who taught Holocaust literature for many years, was inspired by an old letter from Jiren to his family, as well as newspaper clippings from the time. She felt the story needed to be told because it provides a unique perspective on the Holocaust from Austria, where many people welcomed the Nazis. The book also explores the seldom-written-about topic of a Jewish man married to a Christian woman during that tumultuous time.
Nader hopes the book will serve as a poignant reminder of how easily people can be led to do "despicable things." She believes the story's themes of discrimination and the erosion of rights are deeply relevant to modern times. Nader also aims for her readers to gain a sense of empathy and a better understanding of what it means to be a victim. In addition to her historical work, she also writes young adult fantasy, including her book Bessie and Company, which focuses on themes of empathy and community.
